Why did they change year numbering system? I only heard about AD and BC, not CE?

Thanks for asking!

The AD/BC system is the older system for calculating the Julian or Gregorian calendar year. It is based on Christianity, with year 0 being the year Christ was supposedly born. In the AD/BC system, AD stands for anno domini in Medieval Latin, or in English, “in the year of our lord [Jesus Christ].” BC stands for “before Christ.”

Since it is Christian-centric, many object to using the AD/BC system. The alternative that has been proposed is the Common Era system.

In the Common Era system, BC becomes BCE, for “Before Common Era.” You can probably guess that AD becomes CE, which stands for “Common Era.”

Note, some term this the “Current Era” system. Either current or common era is fine, and the abbreviations stay the same.

Hope this answers your question!
